EMILY SPILLER will be the guest musician at the next 1st Tuesday fundraiser June 7 at the Mex Pub.

Emily Spiller has been described as “the next Adele, the new Duffy, a mix of Zap Mama and Feist meets Amy Winehouse.”

Spiller does share attributes of these modern divas, whose music careers have created a new niche in popular music, blending evocative curves with provocative musical edge.

The influences can be heard, but the musical journey Spiller takes you on is fresh, spontaneous and entirely her own.

Come out to the Mex Pub on June 7 for the 1st Tuesday Fundraiser and catch Spiller’s show, which will raise money for the BC SPCA.

The evening will begin at 7:30 p.m. with an opening set by hosts Judy and Bruce Wing, who have partnered with sponsor Roy Tai of the Mex Pub to put on these monthly fundraising events for local charities.

The concert series is now in its third year, drawing together performers from the local music community and their fans, as well as local charities and their volunteers. The monthly mix has helped to promote awareness and appreciation for both musicians and non-profit groups.

Spiller has released three independent albums and has been nominated for five awards at the upcoming 2011 Vancouver Island Music Awards.

Spiller will be the featured guest for the evening, offering a set that is a “mash up of blues, jazz, and soul-infused vocals that simultaneously ache and soothe.”

Spiller uses a loop sampler to create layers of rhythms and harmonies to embellish her instrumentation and soulful vocals.

As New Zealand reviewer Vicki Anderson wrote, “Canadian-born Emily Spiller stands apart from the dirge of nice girls with beautiful voices.”

If local audiences are anything like those she’s experienced on her tour overseas, they will be left wanting more.

Admission is by cash donation at the door, where you’ll meet volunteers from the local SPCA, who can offer tax receipts for donations of $20 or more. You can also bring something from the cupboard for the Comox Valley Food Bank Society.

And don’t forget to bring a friend.
