The Secret Tree Festival of Arts and Sustainability presents Robert Minden and Carla Hallett in concert Feb. 19 at the Denman Island Community Hall.

Working together since 1986 in recording and performance projects, Robert Minden and Carla Hallett continue to explore an allusive world of music, storytelling and song.

The instruments are the invented and found sounds of an ever-expanding orchestra of the unlikely: bowed carpenter’s saws, multiphonic waterphones, blown bottles, floating bowls, yesterday’s toy piano and the forgotten Theremin. Hallett’s songs are originals with simple acoustic settings, her lyrics exploring identity and resonance.

Minden’s storytelling is connecting and engaging.

“Take a listen to one of the most interesting and enjoyable musical entities on the planet and off the wall” — Gary Cristall, Vancouver Folk Festival

“The joy of watching them discover the ‘voices’ of these objects is almost indescribable: it’s like hearing for the first time” Colin Thomas, Georgia Straight, Vancouver

“It is difficult to say whether Minden is a musician who tells stories or a storyteller who makes music; in both areas he is a master …” James Wierzbicki, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

“In short, superb! They can be compared with no one” Timothy Cadan, Jeunesses Musicales du Canada/Youth and Music Canada
