Simms Park stage will light up with the music of several local songwriters at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12 at Simms Millennium Park. The free concert is hosted by the City of Courtenay.

The Songwriters Circle includes Ryan Castle, Alannah Clark, Gordon Phillips, Riel, Nathan Senner and Ashley Sykes.

Castle is a singer/songwriter, born and raised in the Comox Valley. Armed with his weapon of choice - the piano - he hopes to show you his deep love of song through his music.

West Coast-born and raised singer/songstress Clark isn’t shy when it comes to writing about what truly matters to her. Her soulful melodies, and her powerful lyrics paired with her acoustic folk style, will leave you in awe.

As life happens, singer/songwriter Phillips writes. With a wide variety of interests, Gord’s songs are best described as folk rock, combining rootsy rhythms and storyteller lyrics with a rockabilly tone.

Riel is a 17-year-old Metis multi-instrumentalist whose songwriting is mostly inspired by literature and modern popular culture. Riel’s music has generated much intrigue with her powerful voice and folk pop inspired sound.

Senner is well known for his moving songs about life and the human condition. He has been writing for more than 25 years, and has produced and recorded an original CD, Dance in the Moon.

Sykes (Ball) was born into a musical family in the southern U.S. She moved to Vancouver Island in 2000 and brought her love of music with her. She has recently released her first studio album entitled, Dissonance.

Simms Park is located by the 5th Street Bridge, across from Lewis Park. Please bring a lawn chair or blanket.

Other featured Simms Park performances on Sundays at 7 p.m. include Duo of Duos – take two on Aug. 19, and Pure Petty on Aug. 26.

The Simms Summer Concert Series season is sponsored by the Comox Valley Record, The Goat 98.9 FM, What’s On Comox Valley and the City of Courtenay.
