After the two opening concerts at 40 Knots Winery, word’s out about how wonderful the new venue suits community jazz concerts.

On Aug.1, Toronto-based saxophonist Perry White will be performing a two-hour show, starting at 7 p.m. Perry has been performing with Canada’s top creative musicians for more than four decades; this concert features him with two B.C. greats: Steve Wallace on bass, and Nick Peck on keyboards.

“Being exposed to jazz early on and attending the Banff Centre Jazz Workshops, gave me the experience to offer a wide range of skills as a working musician," Perry said.

"It started on the West Coast with Hugh Fraser and the Vancouver Ensemble of Jazz Improvisation, before I moved east in the early ’80s to become a regular of the Toronto jazz scene, the studio scene, popular music styles and work with orchestras. This was followed by touring the world with the Shuffle Demons, Dave Young and other top Canadian groups.”

White garnered many awards and credentials as a soloist and interpreter of a variety of musical styles. Living in Europe in the 1990s he played for the Cirque Du Soleil and collaborated with many European musicians in jazz, funk and electronic music.

Since returning to Toronto White has resumed performing with a variety of artists including Kevin Breit, The John Macleod Big Band, Trio with Rob Piltch and Neil Swainson, The Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Aretha Franklin.

Steve Wallace is a noted Canadian bassist born in Toronto in 1956. Most of his career took place there and internationally, playing clubs, touring and recording with such American greats as Zoot Sims, Ray Bryant, Scott Hamilton, Rosemary Clooney, Woody Herman and many more, as well as with such Canadian giants as Fraser MacPherson, Rob McConnell, Oscar Peterson, Phil Nimmons, Ed Bickert, Mike Murley and many others.

He moved to Courtenay in July 2021 where he now lives with his wife Anna.

Nick Peck is an award-winning composer, pianist and organist from London, UK. After graduating from London’s prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama Nick was increasingly active as a sideman, gaining valuable hands-on experience accompanying UK Jazz heroes including Peter King, Derek Nash, Paul Booth in and around London and the South of England.

After moving to Canada, he established a new presence on the West Coast, appearing in clubs and festivals across the country. Along the way, he has performed with Peter Bernstein, Joe Magnarelli, Nick Hempton, Terell Stafford, Oliver Gannon, Cory Weeds amongst others. He has also recorded for the Cellar Live Label.

Admission is $20 for members, $25 for non-members. Wines and beers will be available throughout the show. Please respect the parking attendants and follow their directions: although there’s plenty of parking area, they are trying to avoid wasting space, and traffic blockages.
