Quebec-based contemporary ceramicist Rachel Grenon, who is creating new work as part of her residency in the Comox Valley, will provide an artist talk at North Island College June 20.
The 7 p.m. event is in the Stan Hagen Theatre, Komoux Hall, NIC Comox Valley Campus. It is free and open to the public.
Grenon, whose work is presented in public and private galleries in Canada and internationally, was one of the artists representing Canada at the 2009 International Craft Biennale in South Korea.
She is participating in the Comox Valley Art Gallery’s Creative Residency Program, which includes partnering organizations NIC School of Fine Art and Design, and the McLoughlin Gardens Society.
Grenon is residing at the McLoughlin Gardens artist residence and is working at the NIC Shadbolt Studios developing her site-specific clay based work: Water Effect mama et bota. She is working with two studio assistants, CVAG student interns Spencer Sheenan-Kalina and James Kormansek.
As part of the residency, Grenon led three make art projects at CVAG, where she guided participants in making ceramic boats. More than 100 community boats will be exhibited on June 27, the opening day of CVAG’s summer program Hold Being Held.
The exhibition will feature clay and time-based works by Grenon and six other artists: Samantha Dickie, Alan Burgess, Gordon Hutchens, Jeff Brett, Roberta Denton, and D Gillian Turner.
The June 27 opening will include a public reception and make art projects starting at 5 p.m., and artist talks at 7 p.m.
