The Hornby Festival on Hornby Island celebrates its 30th year anniversary from July 28 to Aug. 6. It is a great Canadian success story for an arts festival to run so successfully for so many years.

Festival 2011 presents another spectacular lineup of world-class artists from across Canada, as far away as France and Cuba, and as close to home as Hornby Island.

This year’s festival artists include multiple JUNO award-winner, David Francey (folk), Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra (ska/reggae/Latin/folk), Big Machine (folk), Wil Campa y Su Gran Union (13-piece Latin dance band from Cuba), Adrian Dolan’s called fiddle dance under the maples (back by popular demand), Kai Gleusteen & Catherine Ordronneau (three evenings - complete Beethoven violin and piano sonatas), Martha Guth and Erika Switzer (classical soprano and piano), Michael Hornsby (visual art show), Rae Mate, Deirdre Baker & Kit Pearson (readings for children & art workshop) and Anne Glover (storytelling performance for children).

On Thursday, July 28, the festival will host a special, free Anniversary Opening Reception, with a very rare brief concert by the world-renowned Purcell String Quartet, which started the festival 30 years ago and last performed here in 1991. Capacity is limited and doors will be closed when the Hall is full. The opening of the Michael Hornsby visual art show will also be that evening at the Hornby Hall and there will be an archival display of the festival over the 30 years.

The Hornby Festival began with the Purcell String Quartet performing a Beethoven series. In celebration of the anniversary, the festival will host a three-evening series with Kai Gleusteen and Catherine Ordronneau performing the complete Beethoven violin and piano sonatas. Immerse yourself in the life and work of this remarkable composer.
