As diverse as Canada itself but with that “West Coast feel”, the Kemal Evans Project (K.E.P.) formed in 2007 around the creation of their debut album No Pressure System.
Following the album’s release in February ’08, the K.E.P. enjoyed a quick rise to success playing 200+ shows throughout Western Canada and independently selling over 1,000 albums.
In March ’09, the K.E.P. was featured in the West Jet Juno Fest Street Party, an experience that motivated and inspired the band. Shortly following that experience, in June ’09, their single Don’t Hold Back won the Virgin Radio Best of B.C. contest, which led to radio exposure and distinction as the “most requested song of the week.”
K.E.P.’s live experience is original, high energy and captivating. Although each performance is unique and spontaneous, audiences can always rely on the K.E.P. to deliver a show as interesting and diverse as band members themselves.
The K.E.P. consists of Rei Noemi, a Japanese-Canadian vocalist whose sultry feminine energy can be felt on the stage and in the sound; Nigel Gibson, a veteran bassist hailing from Montreal, whose funky foundation keeps the bounce in your step; and Cam Stephens, a drumming prodigy from Vancouver versed in all facets of percussion both Western and worldly.
Last but not least, the composer himself: Kemal Evans. A multi- instrumentalist, percussionist, singer/songwriter and MC, Kemal was born in Montreal, but has lived his life local to Vancouver, Victoria and Salt Spring Island.
Armed with a voice that invokes a smile and lyrics to match, Kemal’s roots are deeply embedded in music and West Coast living.
In short, the K.E.P. is a hot, up-and-coming Canadian band, with a brash new sound. They take their art very seriously and come equipped with a new-age global awareness that is felt in their lyrics and presence.
