Denman’s Community Vegan Potluck Series is hosting a mid-winter feast in the Community Back Hall that will close the weekend-long Secret Tree Festival of Art and Sustainability.

The event this Sunday, which welcomes lovers of food and art, includes an after-dinner presentation by local artist, activist and potluck co-ordinator Fireweed called Art and Activism: Raging, Resisting, Rejoicing!

With International Women’s Day close at hand — March 8 — the slideshow will highlight the role of women artists and activists, although not exclusively so.

Raging, Resisting, Rejoicing! explores “the widening culture of societal transformation through the visual arts,” says the Denman Island resident. “Inside and outside of gallery walls, on the streets and in the landscape, art reflects and influences the way we see and experience life. The exciting merger of art and activism is a growing phenomenon today — confronting the status quo, encouraging dissent, and revisioning our world.”

The dinner gets underway at 6 p.m., followed by the audio-visual presentation at 7. In keeping with the inclusive spirit of the potluck series over many years, attendees are reminded that the event is designated “scent-free” for the comfort of those with chemical sensitivities.

Denman’s Community Vegan Potluck series, initiated in the early ’90s, welcomes food lovers of every persuasion — any 100-per-cent plant-based salad, entrée, dessert or single-item dish that all may share (free of eggs, dairy, honey and gelatin, please) is a suitable contribution.

Nothing fancy is required, unless you are so inspired. An ingredient list is also appreciated.

Admission is by donation (suggested $3). For additional details, visit www.denmanpotlucks.blogspot.com, or call 250-335-1209.
