Comox Valley choirs collaborate for an intergenerational singing experience

Last spring, in preparation for a joint concert, Comox Valley Children’s &Youth Choirs, and Island Voices Chamber Choir spent a joyful afternoon rehearsing together before taking the stage.

Time was spent singing joint pieces, and each choir provided a song share for the other. Directors Sophie Simard and John Hooper view the project for both choirs as a collaboration of voices across generations where a shared love of singing and mentorship can co-exist through music and performance.

Inspired connections between singers of all ages blossomed, and both choirs wanted to do it again. This time, the event is open to the public.

Although the two choirs will not be sharing a formal concert this fall, the choirs are presenting Song Share, an innovative format which allows sharing between choirs, and an open door to the community for a sample of what’s to come later this season from both choirs.

On Wednesday, Nov. 8 from 5:45-6:30 p.m. at St. George’s United Church, the two choirs will share a few selections and collaborations by donation. The event is family-friendly, short and sweet, and all ages are encouraged in the audience.

In addition to Song Share, each choir will host its own concerts.

Island Voices will present two afternoon concerts on Saturday, Nov. 25 at Comox United Church, and on Sunday, Nov. 26 at St. Peter’s Anglican in Campbell River.

Comox Valley Children’s & Youth Choirs will perform a matinee concert Saturday, Dec. 9 at St. John the Divine in Courtenay by donation.
