As a father of three, husband, former firefighter, educator, farmer, and current Vice-Chair of the Regional District, he brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to his community.

With eight years as an employee at UBC Okanagan and an alumnus from both Okanagan College and UBC, Kevin values education and lifelong learning. His passion for the outdoors enhances his appreciation for the region's freedoms, from hunting and fishing to exploring its stunning landscapes. He is committed to addressing local issues, including freshwater management, agriculture, and forestry/wildfire management. Kevin aims to serve all communities within the riding, advocating for their immediate needs while planning for a sustainable future. With his political experience, varied background, and dedication, he is eager to make a positive impact in the Legislature.

What qualifications do you think an MLA should have?

To be a successful Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), strong qualifications, political experience, and people skills are essential. MLAs serve as a vital link between constituents and the provincial government, actively engaging with residents by attending community meetings and events.  Effective communication skills are crucial, as MLAs must articulate local concerns to ministers and ministry officials regarding issues that impact individual constituents. They also can voice these concerns in the Legislative Assembly, participating in debates, making statements, and presenting petitions. Advocacy is a key component of an MLA's role regardless of party, enabling them to push for government action on pressing issues that affect their electoral district and the province. By prioritizing direct engagement with the community, successful MLAs ensure that local voices are not only heard but also integrated into provincial decision-making processes.

What qualifications do you have to represent your riding?

I am a locally raised candidate in the Kelowna-Lake Country-Coldstream riding, and I am passionate about raising my family in the beautiful Okanagan. As a father of three, husband, former firefighter, educator, farmer, and current Vice-Chair of the Regional District, I bring a unique blend of experience and skills that reflects my deep commitment to our community. With existing political experience, I understand the importance of engaging with constituents and fostering strong connections through community meetings, events, and representation. Building relationships is essential to truly grasp the needs and concerns of the people I aim to represent. My background in education and public service has equipped me with the tools to listen actively and communicate effectively, ensuring that everyone feels valued, heard, and represented. Whether it’s addressing local infrastructure needs, supporting agriculture and environmental concerns, or enhancing access to healthcare and education, I am committed to making our region a better place for all.

What political issues will drive voters to the polls this election?

There is no doubt that healthcare, homelessness, community safety, housing, and the drug epidemic will dominate the political landscape in the coming weeks and significantly influence party platforms. These are critical issues that should drive people to the polls to ensure their opinions are heard.

While I bring valuable experience to the table, I also represent a younger voice that can inspire and motivate younger demographics to engage in the electoral process. It’s vital that this generation feels empowered to contribute to the discussions that shape our future.

Additionally, I have a strong background in addressing important issues such as freshwater management, education, agriculture, and wildfire/forestry management. These areas demand urgent attention and should be prioritized by any provincial government. By focusing on these challenges, we can work together to create solutions that benefit all members of our community. Your voice matters, and together we can drive meaningful change.

What unique issues are affecting your riding?

An important issue to address is the recent boundary changes that have expanded this riding to include the District of Coldstream. I recognize that many constituents may feel confused or frustrated by these changes, and I want to assure you that community representation will be at the forefront of my efforts.

We have two post-secondary institutions, UBCO and Okanagan College, ready to expand their local offerings, a potential agrotech program and a Faculty of Agriculture, is a long-held aspiration of the farming community in the Okanagan. Additionally, the airport is planning to expand operations on its eastern lands, creating new opportunities for growth. As the Regional Director for the area, I possess insights into these issues that other candidates may lack.

Our high-elevation reservoirs are well-positioned for increased storage and freshwater retention, which is essential for our growing population and agricultural needs. Furthermore, our forestry industry is undergoing significant changes with limited government support. There are valuable synergies between timber production and wildfire prevention that can be leveraged in surrounding interface zones.

Lastly, education and school funding have historically been sore points for residents, especially regarding Rutland Middle School. I understand the complexities of these local issues and recognize the challenges we face in pursuing effective solutions for our community.
