The founder of Zatoun Fair Trade, which imports and sells Palestinian olive oil in Canada, will speak in Courtenay this Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Zocalo Café. World Community and Mid-Islanders for Justice and Peace in the Middle East invite you to join them in welcoming Robert Massoud and sampling this gourmet olive oil along with the savoury Zata’ar herb mix served in a variety of appetizers. You will be able to purchase both products at this event. Through this project, farmers are paid fair trade prices. From the sales of olive oil, donations are made to Trees for Life, a program to plant 12,000 olive trees each year in Palestine. An additional $1 per bottle goes to help support Project Hope, an independent, grassroots effort to bring the expressive arts (painting, drawing, music and drama) as a means to help heal and contribute to youth in Palestine. Massoud will speak about the problems of farming under occupation, development of co-operative structures, and the hope that Zatoun projects bring to Palestinian communities. — World Community
