Doctors of BC and the Comox Valley Division of Family Practice are collaborating once again to bring ‘Walk With Your Doc’ to the community.

The event will take place on Friday, June 14, from noon to 1 p.m. at Marina Park in Comox. Participants will meet at the gazebo.

The event, which started in 2017 has been attracting more participants every year.

“These easy walks provide an informal, social setting for you to discuss the benefits of daily activity with doctors in the community as they ‘walk the talk’ with you,” said Alida Sklarski, of the Comox Valley Division of Family Practice.“There will be family doctors, nurse practitioners and allied health professionals, as well as staff members taking part.

“Last year we had 51 (participants) and the year before we had 22 in Comox and 13 in Courtenay. It was split into to walks back then. Now we only have one event.”

Anyone is welcome to participate, and those currently without a family doctor can obtain information regarding that topic.

The event is rain or shine and free to attend.

As a bonus, there will be prizes and swag at the event.

“We will have at least one rec pass to raffle off as well as free Doctors of BC hip bags, t-shirts, and bandanas, while supplies last,” said Sklarski. “We will also have water and granola bars, oranges and apples, or things like that available to all participants.”

Registration is at noon. There will be a warmup period with a physio and a family physician at 12:15 and the walk will begin at 12:30.

The event is accessible.

“Last year we did two walks. We did one longer one and the other one was just around the (accessible) marina path,” said Sklarski.

The Comox Valley walk is part of a province-wide initiative to help residents touch base with doctors in a social setting.
