The love affair with vinyl has been reignited, which shows with the amount of record stores, places to find your vinyl and more record shows than before. This most curious return to favour is well demonstrated right here in the Comox Valley. The upcoming Fourth Annual Comox Valley Record Show on Oct. 27 is a testament to the format’s persistence.
The Comox Valley is served by two full time record stores, Bop City in Courtenay and Moon’s Records in Cumberland. Bop City has survived and thrived through the CD era while Moon’s Records is a relative newcomer. The dozens of vendors from up and down the island and the lower mainland have put an enormous amount of work into bringing their impressive array of new and used to this event.
It seems that the people wanting vinyl spans a wide demographic.
“It’s a bit of everybody. We see kids with parents, young people building a collection, older folks rebuilding a collection. The idea of having records in the house appeals across ages and genders,” says event organizer Jack Tieleman.
The upcoming record show will feature a wide array of vendors from first timers to those that have been flipping sides for decades. Count on a multitude of styles as well. Past shows have offered everything from underground electronic to soul and beyond with a heap of classic rock added as always. There will also be a poster vendor there this year featuring hundreds of offerings from shows in our region.
The show runs from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Oct. 27 at the Comox Valley Curling Centre. Admission is still only $2 and kids under 12 are free. There is lots of parking and the kitchen and Extra End Lounge will be open, not to mention curling to watch alongside the record show.
