Treats Accessibly, an initiative created to encourage accessible treats and Halloween fun for participants of all abilities, has teamed up with REMAX Canada, Canadian Tire and PetValu to make neighbourhoods across Canada accessible for participants of all abilities.

Locally, six REMAX agents (Clint Woodcock, Fang Wu, Ryan Williams, Heather Mossauer and the Rice Team – Andrew & Derek) have been walking the neighbourhoods that they live in to encourage homes to be a part of this wonderful opportunity.

Their goal is to bring awareness of the extra hurdles that disabled participants face on Halloween and to promote the guidelines of Treat Accessibly which are: 1) provide a barrier free area, 2) create a safe environment and 3) recognize that everyone is different.

The full explanation of these can be found at .

Branded ‘Treat Accessibly’ signs will be delivered to participating homes prior to Halloween so that trick-or-treaters needing fully-accessible fun and treats can find the homes more easily.  The hope is that multiple homes in neighbourhoods will have signs up so there is less getting in and out of cars to participate.

The largest neighbourhood participation will be in North East Comox. This will be the third year for the Rice Team to spread the word and they are seeing great success.

“On the first year, there was a small number of homes around my neighbourhood that participated,” says Derek Rice. “But each year, I go to more doors around my neighbourhood and people remember the fun we were having the year before so they commit to getting involved. We encourage children of all abilities to come by this neighbourhood. It is in the north east part of Comox including Moralee Drive, Ridgemount Drive, Clear View Place, Ocean View Ave, Sky View & Mountain View Crescent. We are there from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.”

Other neighbourhoods new this year are: The Ridge in Courtenay, Aberdeen Heights (Stirling Cres/Place & St Andrews Way) and Walbran Place/Elderberry in East Courtenay and Heron/Bolt Ave near Aspen school in Comox.

If you are interested in having a sign to show your support, you can email TreatsinCV@gmail.com and a REMAX agent will bring you a sign. Or you can pick one up at Bosley’s Pet Store, a sub brand of PetValu.
