They’re big, they’re beautiful, and they’re back from the brink of extinction.

The public is invited to attend a presentation on the return of humpback whales to B.C.’s coast. The presentation runs from 8-9:30 p.m. at the Florence Filberg Centre, main hall, upper level, Wednesday April 26 following the annual general meeting of the Cape Lazo Power and Sail Squadron.

Presenter Jackie Hildering is a researcher with the Marine Education and Research Society and wishes to share MERS’ research and discuss how we can work together to better understand these giants and the risks they face (for the sake of boater and whale safety). Information will include research on humpback feeding, rate of entanglement, efforts to increase awareness around collision, and what to do if entanglement is witnessed.

As an avid diver and underwater photographer, Jackie is also known as “The Marine Detective” with recent on-camera experiences, including being featured on Animal Planet’s Wild Obsession series and in the BBC productions New threat to Canada’s Pacific humpback whales? and Ingenious Animals. It indeed promises to be informative and entertaining!

See mersociety.org for more information.

Doors open to the public at 7:45 p.m. No entrance fee.

Cape Lazo Power and Sail Squadron will accept donations at the door, to be presented to MERS.
