With the soil slow to warm this year, it’s still a good time to install new shrubs so the North Island Rhododendron Society (NIRS) annual rhododendron and plant sale April 30 couldn’t be more timely.

While many outlets ship in rhodos and azaleas this time of year, there are advantages to buying directly from local growers.

Besides being already acclimated to the local environment, the shrubs are available at the sale in a large variety of species and the propagators are on hand to provide growing advice to ensure healthy plants.

Other aids for buyers include a truss display to show the plants already in bloom, an information table with experienced volunteers to research questions and a series of workshops starting at 10:45 a.m. to provide tips on care and maintenance. This year’s workshop leaders will talk and answer questions on how to choose a shrub, tips on planting and care, how to use companion plants and all you need to know about raising mason bees.

Details: Sale is Sunday, April 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the K’omox Band Hall, 3320 Comox (Dyke) Rd. There will be a free draw for a prize rhododendron and NIRS members with wheelbarrows will be on hand to transport plants to cars.
