On March 10 at noon in front of the main building at the Comox Valley North Island College Campus for an event in honour of International Women's Day. This event is part of the worldwide ‘One Billion Rising’ initiative, and it is in collaboration with the Comox Valley Transition Society, the North Island Students’ Union (NISU), the North Island College Faculty Union (NICFA), Social Service Worker Diploma students, faculty, and community volunteers.

We respectfully acknowledge that the land we will gather on is on the Unceded Traditional Territory of the K’ómoks First Nation, the traditional keepers of this land.

This event is a chance to come together, rise and dance for a short gathering (about 30-45 minutes) that will include speakers from the Comox Valley Transition Society, an important community resource that has been providing services to the community since 1987.

One Billion Rising is a global movement started in 2013 to raise awareness of violence against women, girls, and gender expansive persons. The term "One Billion Rising" reflects statistics that about 1 in 3 women and girls experience violence or other forms of abuse yearly - that is about one billion women and girls worldwide. Since its inception this yearly event has focused on how we need to be concerned about many things that impact us, including caring for the earth.

For 2025 the focus for One Billion Rising is to Rise for Freedom. This includes freedom against fascism or authoritarianism that can have a disproportionately high impact on women, girls, and gender diverse persons, particularly intersecting with racism, colonialism, and poverty.

Join us to dance, rise, listen. Men are welcome to join us and support this cause.
