Are you interested in any of the following topics — Voluntary Simplicity, Deep Ecology, Parenting for Healthy Children and a Healthy Planet, or What’s Your Tree – Passion, Purpose and Power?
These four discussion/action circles have been organized by Vancouver-based Be the Change and are being introduced here in the Valley under the wing of World Community.
All of the courses are aimed at people who believe in a more environmentally sustainable, meaningful and socially just human presence on this Earth.
They will start as soon as they’ve filled up.
All the groups contain curriculum about a specific topic and then a component which uses the Canadian Be The Change Action Guide, which contains many resources and ideas for action that support participants in moving towards their own goals which reflect their values.
Details, including meeting times, cost of reading materials, contact information and format, are at www.tidechange.ca in the Community Groups section, listed as Be the Change/Awaken the Dreamer group.
The Voluntary Simplicity group will meet for seven Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. in a home in the Puntledge Park area. Voluntary simplicity is often described as living deliberately — making conscious and thoughtful choices which align your life with your values.
The Healthy Children/Healthy Planet group will meet for nine Monday mornings in a home on Fifth Street near Lake Trail School. This uplifting and informative group supports parents as they reflect on how to counteract the pervasive effects of advertising, media and our consumer culture on their child’s view of the world with more compassionate and ethical values.
The Reconnecting with Earth (Deep Ecology) group will meet for eight Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. in a home on 26th Street in Courtenay.
This group will appeal to people who find nature intrinsically spiritual. Past participants have remarked on how much the course shifted their approach to their own lives and the entire universe.
The What’s Your Tree – Passion, Purpose and Power group will meet for seven Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Black Creek/Merville area.
This group will appeal to people interested in clarifying their life purpose and reflecting on how they can incorporate that into making a positive change in the world.
The founder of this course is Julia Butterfly Hill, the young woman who gained international attention when she camped out 200 feet up in an ancient redwood tree for two years to protect the tree from logging.
