ROBIN SHACKLETON conducts drumming workshops Sunday at the Fallen Alders Hall in Royston.

This Sunday, Comox Valley rhythm enthusiasts have the opportunity to participate in two unique drumming workshops.Back to offer another session of Middle Eastern drumming instruction, Robin Shackleton of Sylvan Temple Drums (www.sylvantemple.ca) will be at the Fallen Alders in Royston teaching workshops in doumbek (3:45 to 4:45 p.m.) and frame drum (5 to 6 p.m.).He is a Middle Easter drummer extraordinaire, and a talented maker of the most beautiful drums which he handcrafts using salvaged wood and imbues with the true spirit of an environmentalist and lover of the rhythms of life.Be prepared to experience being enchanted by haunting and gorgeous Middle Eastern rhythms while learning or revisiting a different “language of the drum.”This is a rare opportunity to learn Middle Eastern drum techniques and rhythms on both the doumbek, which may be a more familiar drum with its hourglass shape and bellydance rhythms, and the frame drum (Bendir, Tar, Duff and Kanjira), which invites you to use both hands to produce rhythms while holding the drum in one of them — truly a one-of-a-kind experience. These workshops are sponsored by Rhythm Spirit (http://rhythm-spirit.blogspot.com) and pre-registration is necessary; for more information and to hold your spot, contact Monica at 250-338-1444 or e-mail drumdeva@gmail.com— Rhythm Spirit
