As part of the Village of Cumberland’s Official Community Plan (OCP) review, residents are invited to share their views on how Cumberland should incorporate growth over the next 20 years and respond to today’s challenges.

Community engagement events are scheduled for May 22, 23 and 30.

“We want to hear from residents on a range of topics that shape who we are as a community, including housing diversity and affordability, environmental protection, heritage protection, and local economic development,” said Mayor Vickey Brown. “Community participation is key to developing effective policy, actions and priorities for the village.”

The following events are scheduled:

• Drop-in: Wed. May 22, 2-7 p.m. Topics: Built Environment, Natural Environment, Growth Scenarios.

• Drop-in: Thu. May 23, 2-7 p.m. Topics: Community Well-Being, Economy, Growth Scenarios

• Workshop: Thu. May 30, 4–6 p.m.: Topics: Local Economic Development and Commercial and Industrial Land Uses. Please RSVP to planning@cumberland.ca to attend this workshop.

All three events take place at the council chambers at 2675 Dunsmuir Ave., next to the village office.

The OCP sets out a long-term vision for the community and guides growth and change. The plan identifies priorities for housing, economic development, transportation and mobility, infrastructure, heritage protection, arts and culture, food systems, parks and recreation, climate change, environmental protection and overall community well-being. The OCP also establishes future land use designations that identify where additional residential density should go as Cumberland’s population grows and what areas should be reserved for commercial and industrial development.

Following the community engagement events this May, the village will draft updates to the existing 2014 OCP. The draft OCP will be shared with the public in the fall for feedback.
