May 4 is National Cohousing Day, and Creekside Commons is welcoming people from the community to learn more about the idea.

Creekside Commons is opening its doors to the public on Sunday, May 4 from noon until 4 p.m. The community is located at 2202 Lambert Drive in Courtenay.

Site tours will be given on the half hour, and the common house will be open for refreshments and viewing all afternoon. At 2 p.m., there will be a 30-minute talk about how to start your own community.

Cohousing is a growing movement, creating small neighbourhoods or condominiums where neighbours get to know one another, and children can play in a car-free space. While cohousing can range from small apartments to detached homes, the intent is to build community. British Columbia has 15 cohousing communities, with at least a dozen more in the forming or construction stages.

See creeksidecommons.ca  for more details.
