From Jan. 15 to Feb. 2, residents of the city of Courtenay who are unable or unwilling to repurpose their used collection containers have the option to donate them.

This initiative was introduced in response to the interest expressed by residents during the automated cart delivery period in 2023.

Option 1 - Curbside pickup - Jan. 15 to Feb. 2:

City residents can place their clean, used garbage, recycling, and/or organics containers behind their automated carts for curbside pickup on their regular collection day. It is essential to note that only clean containers free of waste will be collected. If a container is missed on the scheduled collection day, residents can place it out the following week.

Option 2 – Old container exchange at City Public Works – McKenzie Avenue – Jan. 15 to Feb. 10:

Residents can drop off clean, used garbage, recycling, and/or organics containers outside the McKenzie Avenue gate at the City Public Works yard. Those interested in repurposing the containers for other uses (e.g., animal feed, storage) can pick them up at the same location on a first-come, first-served basis. Any remaining containers at the end of the event will be sent to Merlin Plastics for recycling. The drop-off location is 1094 McKenzie Ave., outside the City Public Works yard.

Comox options

For town of Comox residents unable to repurpose their existing waste collection containers, there is a free drop-off opportunity at the west parking lot of Comox Marina Park, near the boat launch, from Jan. 6-13. Please note that there is no collection of items on Sunday, Jan. 7.

This event also allows individuals interested in repurposing containers to pick them up on a first-come, first-served basis. The containers can be creatively reused in environmentally friendly ways, such as DIY planters, rain barrels, or storage for recycling depot items, mulch, and other landscaping items.
