Community invited to paint mural in Courtenay

Tia Caouette was looking for a way to build a sense of community connection through art.

Caouette is an artist and often gets together with friends to create art. She was trying to think of a way to bring the community together through art. In March she found the Comox Valley Community Foundation's Neighbourhood Small Grants program and thought it was a great way to make that happen.

The result: a community mural painting party in downtown Courtenay.

"I think that when people can work together on a project like this, they feel connected," she said.

The event will be held in the square near Blue Spruce Ice Cream, the Potter's Guild and Shelter Clothing on 5th Street. Caouette has already outlined the artwork on the wall, and said that the process from here is "like a big paint-by-numbers."

"It's pretty simple, you don't really need any artistic talent," she said.

People can come down any time between 5 and 8 p.m., paint will be available, and sidewalk chalk will be available for the kids.

The event is weather-dependent. The paint does not perform well in extreme heat conditions, so Caouette will be watching the forecast and updating people via about when it will be held. The goal, however, is to host it on either Monday or Tuesday next week (July 15 or 16).
