Tips for keeping your dogs safe during Valentine’s Day

It’s cold outside but our hearts get warmed by that special day Feb. 14 when humans are particularly nice to each other and often give each other sweets and treats. Valentine's Day can be a delightful celebration, but you pet owners must take precautions to keep us dogs safe during this romantic holiday.

Take it from me, I’m Clancy the golden retriever who lives next door to Pet Treat Bakery, where the delicious all natural pet treats are made by the folks at Beaufort Association for Inclusion (BAI). BAI operates day programs for adults with developmental disabilities and everyone who works at Pet Treat Bakery has a diverse ability.

Several potential hazards can put your furry friend at risk. Key Safety Considerations:

· Chocolate and Sweets: Keep all chocolates, candies, and treats containing xylitol far from us dog's reach. Chocolate contains methylxanthines that can cause serious health issues like vomiting, seizures, and abnormal heart rates.

· Flowers and Decorations: Be cautious with floral arrangements, as many flowers like lilies can be toxic to dogs. Roses with thorns can also cause injury if we investigate too closely.

· Alcohol and Candles: Never leave alcoholic beverages or lit candles unattended. Even small amounts of alcohol can cause severe health problems, and candles pose fire risks if knocked over by a curious pup.

· Gift Wrapping: Clean up ribbons, wrapping paper, and balloons immediately, as these can become choking hazards or cause digestive tract blockages.

We dogs could use some extra pampering too. How about a grooming session at Pampered Dogs inside of Woofy’s Pet Foods in Comox. Or some dog training from Canine Connections Training or Doggydo Dog Daycare and Boarding so we can get more praise. I love it when I get the treats as rewards. And we always love extra cuddles and your undivided attention at any time of the year.

Remember by staying vigilant and proactive, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable Valentine's Day for both you and your beloved dog. And remember, when you’re out shopping, don’t forget to buy local whenever you can.
