Boys & Girls Club reviving Cutting Corners fundraiser

The Boys & Girls Club of Central Vancouver Island (formerly Comox Valley Boys & Girls Club) has been responsible for some innovative fund raising since the late 1990s. Women’s events such as Bridesmaid Revisited, Lady in Red, and Cowgirls Don’t were sell-out successes. The Gingerbread Village first made its appearance at the Courtenay Museum with some 20 entries and over the years has grown to become a seasonal favourite.

Do you have extra fabric taking up room in your house? Call the Boys & Girls Club of Central Vancouver Island. Someone will pick it up for the club’s next fundraising project.

The golf tournament scheduled for June 1 this year started out as a golf marathon, with golfers challenged to golf 100 holes and again, this event has grown over the years both in scope and number of golfers.

In 2003 a short article in this newspaper requesting recycled fabric and craft materials resulted in hundreds of bags and boxes of the same being delivered for the first Cutting Corners for Boys & Girls Club Fabric & Craft Garage Sale. So successful was the event that it was repeated twice and each time raised thousands of dollars for the Club. Word got out and the last two sales saw lineups of customers around the block waiting to hit the bargains!

Once again, Boys & Girls Club is about to revitalize Cutting Corners. With a keen group of teens who are interested in entrepreneurial enterprise, the club is hoping to raise enough in donated material to open a permanent shop that specializes in recycled fabric and craft materials. Monies raised from this endeavour will provide ongoing financial support for young people interested in business.

If you are wondering what to do with that fabric you have been storing on shelves, or craft ideas that seemed like a good idea at the time, wonder no more. A quick phone call and someone will pick up the items, leaving you with more shelf/closet space and the knowledge that you have helped support your local Boys & Girls Club.

For more information or to arrange pick-up, please call Judy Atkinson at 250-331-9141.
