Amnesty event May 13 at Isfeld

Cairo’s Tahrir Square erupted in an impromptu cacophony of cheering as Egyptians recently celebrated the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak.

The Egyptian tyrant for 30 years was deposed amid promises by the army to begin the return to democracy — all with relatively little loss of life.

Amnesty International staffperson Don Wright was in Cairo during the dramatic events of this spring. Wright will describe his experience of the protests at a Comox Valley Amnesty-sponsored event on May 13, where he will speak about the measures Egyptian authorities must take to ensure that all Egyptians are able to participate meaningfully in shaping their future.

He will also highlight the work Amnesty International is doing to help make human rights a reality in North Africa and the Middle East.

The May 13 event at the Mark Isfeld Secondary School multi-purpose room will start at 7 p.m. with a presentation by the LetzSing Choir and an introduction to the work of Amnesty International.

Admission is by donation to Amnesty Canada. The presentation is part of the Comox Valley Amnesty chapter’s fundraising to support the work of Amnesty International.

Wright is a regional co-ordinator with Amnesty International Canada. He works with Amnesty members and groups, as well as teachers, the public and media, to promote respect for human rights and end the violation of human rights around the world. There will time for a questions from those attending.

The May 13 event will celebrate Amnesty International’s 50th anniversary. Fifty years ago, one man, outraged by the injustices he saw, made an appeal to others to unite with him in common action. Peter Benenson saw that by using our rights — our freedom to act for a just world — people together can achieve extraordinary things. Amnesty International now has three million members who unite against injustice around the world.
