Social Media is still confusing to a significant number of us in the Comox Valley.

For those of us not in the "digital native" generation, it can be overwhelming to think that we have to learn about all kinds of online applications that will suck up hours of time, and for what? So we can hear about what people have for lunch? How can it really help my business?

Don’t panic.

Two local business owners are partnering up again to offer social media workshops for other local small business owners.

The Social Media Marketing Workshop Camp will cover the same material as their successful six-week workshop series, but is designed as a weekend event to help business owners jump-start the social media component of their marketing plans.

Dian Smit is well-known in the Comox Valley community, regularly volunteering her expertise in technology to a number of local business organizations and community events.

Smit’s business and volunteer work is focused on helping people with websites and social media, as well as making sure Wi-Fi and other behind-the-scenes technology is up and running. She was recently honoured by the Comox Valley Home-Based Business Association for this work.

Beth Campbell Duke can also be found combining her business and volunteer efforts empowering individuals and groups to dream and set big goals and achieve them. Campbell Duke’s past life includes working with adult literacy learners, teaching high school science and redesigning a Career and Academic Readiness program for at-risk youth.

The workshop being offered covers basic marketing strategies in a social media environment and focuses on the major social media applications being used today (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and location-based applications such as FourSquare and Trip Advisor). The workshops include information about how these applications are being used by other businesses and how to integrate their use into your existing marketing plans. We’ll also discuss how to choose the applications that are right for you and your business and strategies to manage your social media applications so they don’t become the boss of you. Participants will walk away with new social media accounts up and running.

The workshop is scheduled for June 11 and 12.
