Help Tim Hortons send a kid to camp

Buy a coffee and help turn a kid’s life around.

Do so by dropping into one of the local Tim Hortons locations Wednesday, June 1 during Tim Hortons Camp Day.

Proceeds from coffee sales – and donations – will help send economically disadvantaged children to a camp in Kananaskis, Alta.

This year, seven children from the Comox Valley will be sent to Kananaskis — one of six camps in Canada offered by the Tim Horton Children’s Foundation. A seventh is located in Kentucky, USA.

“The kids that we select from the Valley come from the various elementary schools,” said Steven Caissie, who manages the four local Tim Hortons. “We have all the schools on a rotational basis. If it wasn’t for this opportunity, there probably wouldn’t be an opportunity for them to go to camp.”

One camper from a previous year is going back for the Youth Leadership Program — a five-level program designed to teach lifelong leadership skills.

Canada-wide last year, the Tim Hortons chain raised about $12 million during the June 1 event. The four Valley locales raised about $15,400, with some money raised beforehand.

Camp Day has been operating more than two decades.
