Five Black Press newspapers and reporters have been honoured with this year's Jumpstart Awards, making up nearly half of the contest's 12 winners.
Receiving Jumpstart Awards for 2013 were articles by Dan Kinvig of the Abbotsford News, Mario Bartel of the Burnaby NewsLeader, Eric Welsh of the Chilliwack Progress, Emanuel Sequeira of the Penticton Western News, and Don Descoteau of the Victoria News.
The awards are judged and handed out by Newspapers Canada, a national initiative that represents 830 daily, weekly, and community newspapers across Canada.
Jumpstart is a charity created by Canadian Tire, which hopes to help financially disadvantaged kids get involved in organized sport by covering their registration, transportation, or equipment costs.
From the awards' press release: "Since 2005, Canadian Tire Jumpstart has helped give more than 500,000 Canadian kids the chance to play and the momentum is stronger than ever. To lend your support, visit Canadian Tire Jumpstart at jumpstart.canadiantire.ca."
